Mycelium á la Hermes

You all know how much I love the idea of mushrooms replacing plastic packaging, mushrooms that eat plastics, and mushrooms as a meat substitute, but what about mushrooms as a high-end handbag by Hermés?

Interested?  Read on about how Hermés in conjunction with MycoWorks is using fine mycelium to create a vegan bag.  The possibilities are endless!

Well I’ll be, that looks like a handbag I’d be proud to wear! Good on Hermès going this route (root) and it looks like Gucci may do this as well. It would go a great way to reducing the need/greed for eg crocodile bags and shoes, wallets etc. Great post Pam! xx

  4. Amazing, Pam! Solutions do exist. We’ve just got to look for them. Though I must admit that I’ve never imagined mushrooms as a leather substitute.

Hi Pam – there’s so much science going on, and I so enjoy reading and learning about the research that’s looking at all aspects. I certainly didn’t know about the Hermes bag or the company MycoWorks … so interesting to read up about – loved it, thank you – Hilary

Wouldn’t it be great to have a faux leather substitute, Hilary? No more terrible chemicals from tanning leather. No more using gazillions of gallons of water to raise the cow. So much easier in the environment!
