The iconic film The Dirty Dozen debuted in 1967. The movie depicts a group of WWII soldiers –“twelve general prisoners, convicted by courts-martial and sentenced to serve lengthy prison terms,” i.e., Army criminals — chosen to parachute across enemy lines and assassinate high-ranking personnel under Hitler’s command.

The group of us from the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association that attended the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources DCNR’s cleanup of the floodplains along the Susquehanna Riverlands State Park yesterday were not so storied but simply hoping to do our part to eliminate some of the ridiculous pieces of trash, plastics, and other detritus that have burrowed into the soft earth here at the river’s edge.
Plastic drums . . .

Pallets . . .

Tires . . .

Pontoons . . .

A freezer . . .

and other trash that doesn’t belong in the river was part of the day’s catch. How this all got here was anyone’s guess.

Ted Evgeniadis, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper taking a little break in the hot tub.

Let’s keep this river beautiful!

Thanks to John Naylor, former LSRA Board member and Susquehanna_Plastic_Pickin_1000 for organizing us all.

Let’s keep this work going. Consider becoming a member of the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper today. And as always, thanks for dropping by.

Ye heavens, a hot tub?!?! Your pictures remind me of the Studio Ghibli film SPIRITED AWAY. At one point the protagonist is told she must take care of a Stink Spirit: a huge, oozing, smelly blob of a creature. While helping him, she feels what she thinks is a thorn and pulls it out. Turns out she actually found a bicycle handlebar. What follows is a deluge of garbage that polluted a River Spirit. Finally free of the garbage, the River Spirit can flow once more. xxxx

I remember that movie, but I didn’t remember the plot that well. I like your dirty dozen better. You did great with this project.

I’d never seen the movie before so I watched it when I did the post. So many great actors! Although I totally didn’t get the point of the Telly Savalis character. 🤷♀️

Carol, hi and thanks for stopping by. Many rivers to cross, eh, and clean up, too. 😂🙏🤗

That’s a shame that people just dump debris wherever they feel like it – they could fine them and they’d likely still bring that debris in under cover of night and you’d have to deal with it. A good effort here to help tame the trash!

Thanks, Linda, although I doubt the hot tub was dumped. Probably more like a hundred-year storm carried it away but who knows really? Up until last weekend, the strangest thing I ever helped pull out of a river, other than toilets and tires, was a ATM Machine! Go figure! Although I’m pretty sure there were nefarious intentions with that one and a deliberate dump. 😂

Amazing stuff people toss in the waterways Pam. In the Detroit area, I’d say we have at least a half-dozen times a year that people try to steal an ATM machine and are unsuccessful and they are not always outside ATMs; thieves think nothing of crashing through plate glass to get at it.

Oh no, Rose! We can do better, I know it. But first we have to stop some shenanigans and also doomscrolling. 🫤

This past summer I joined a local clean up crew and picked up litter (mostly cigarette butts in my neighbourhood) and felt awesome afterwards. It looks like you all worked very hard and accomplished a lot!
