Jenna’s mother, Alice Metcalf has been missing for ten years. Jenna who was three at the time her mother went missing desperately wants to find her and refuses to believe she’s dead because that would mean she’d never see her again. But the alternative, that Alice abandoned Jenna at the age of three, is the more painful one and an alternative Jenna can’t bear to consider. Jenna’s father has been institutionalized since the night her mother went missing so any help he could have provided will not be forthcoming anytime soon. It really does raise awareness for animal conservation issues. If you have further reading interest, you might want to check out “When Elephants Weep.” It’s a different way of looking at these amazing animals.

I’m really interested in books that have YA main characters that aren’t considered straight YA genre fiction. In the genre you often get books written for kids in which the parents are missing or dead or otherwise incapacitated so that the kids can have more “agency.” I get especially tired of all the absent/dead mother cliches. I guess here too, the parents are missing at the start, but based on my other experience of Picoult’s work that doesn’t mean that family relationships will be de-emphasized or unrealistically teen-centered.

No, it wasn’t teen-centric, but a pivotal POV. All the other characters had their own POV so it was really well-tied together. I just loved all the elephant stuff.
