It’s always been interesting to me how the holy days in the christian calendar overlap with the pagan holidays of old. Before we had Christmas, there was the Germanic Yule — which gave us things like yuletide caroling and the yule log — and the Roman Saturnalia, a rousing ruckus of a time when laws were temporarily suspended and people exchanged gifts, got rip-roaring drunk, and ate — wait for it — fruit cake!

No matter what your holiday you celebrate, remember there is no wine without clean water. A little something to ponder while you drink your Christmas ale.

Here comes the sun!

The Sunrise Beach photo is wonderful!

I, too, love the origin stories of our different idioms and customs. Thank you for sharing! One of my favorites (non-Christmas-y) is the origin of the good night wish “sleep tight” ๐

Because of the way they held the straw mattresses together with twine, right? And usually followed by, โdonโt let the bedbugs biteโ because the straw had mites of some kind. Is that how you know it?

Hi Pam – when the sun eventually returns here … I’ll be really grateful – but at least it’s ‘warm’ but wet! Still – alive and well we are. One doctor + boyfriend missed out on Christmas down here due to Covid … but not serious though, and I’m sure they’ll be down soon.
We do need to look after our planet and think about the future … leaving things as pristine as possible – I hope more learn and understand … we can only lead by example, at least we can, and hope others follow.
Cheers and all the best for the coming year – Hilary

Excited for the sun to return here in Wisconsin, to be sure! Frankly, excited the holidays are wrapping up, too. This December was a tough one with the more grueling work schedules. We did our best for our kiddos to have a happy Christmas, but we definitely are happy to have the stress of Christmas in the past. I hope you are able to have some fun with family as we transition into a new year!

It has been tough, especially with all the escalating covid numbers. I feel like we are back in the bubble. But kids are all home and everyoneโs healthy so all good. I hope your holiday is spent with the fam and happily remembered, Jean. ๐โฅ๏ธ๐ฅฐ

After the holidays are over, the days will lengthen as we slowly make our way to Summer Solstice – to feel the light on our faces is what gets us through these trying times. Blessings to you and your family for this holiday season and beyond Pam.
